Spurs face defensive crisis ahead of Arsenal game

Sebastien Bassong

Tottenham Hotspur face some defensive injury problems ahead of tomorrow night’s Carling Cup tie with Arsenal.

Ledley King will obviously not be fit to play after playing 90 minutes against Wolves on Saturday, while Vedran Corluka (back), Younes Kaboul (hamstring) and Michael Dawson (knee & ankle) are all injured.

Harry is refusing to risk the fitness of William Gallas against his former side after the Frenchman suffered cramps against Wolves – probably down to a lack of first-team football.

“We had lots of centre-halves a week ago, we were overloaded, almost,” Redknapp told Sky Sports News.

“Then suddenly you lose (Younes) Kaboul with a hamstring (injury) on Saturday and (Vedran) Corluka has got a back injury, so we pick up two injuries there.

“Michael Dawson is out long-term. Ledley (King) can’t play Saturday and midweek every week.

“(Sebastien) Bassong is really the only central defender we’ve got. I’ve got to find someone to play alongside him tomorrow.”

“William Gallas has just come in, he’s had no training really and I’ve thrown him straight into some games, so he’s another player I’ve got to be careful with,” Redknapp said of his summer signing.

“I would have played him but he’s played 90 minutes last Saturday and 90 minutes this Saturday on the back of not playing at all since the World Cup and not training at all.

“He cramped up with 10 minutes to go on Saturday (against Wolves). He had severe cramp in his calf and we thought he could have easily done more damage.

“He’s come in and done excellent for us so I’ve got to protect him.”
