Spurs graduate sends emotional farewell message after 11 years at the club

Joshua Oluwayemi shared a touching farewell message on social media this week after he was released by Tottenham this summer, ending an 11-year association.

The former Spurs U23 goalkeeper recently joined Portsmouth on a short-term contract after becoming a free agent (BBC).

The Nigerian joined Spurs as a 10-year-old, developing through the North London club’s academy. While he never made an appearance for the first team, Oluwayemi played 62 times across the various youth sides (Transfermarkt).

Oluwayemi found himself behind the likes of Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman in the pecking order when it came to providing cover for more experienced goalkeepers in the squad. So the decision was made to release him from the club in the summer of 2022.

On July 19, he posted the following message on his Twitter account: ‘It’s an end of a beautiful chapter at the club.

‘I want to say thank you to all the coaching staff, the fans and the teammates. Picking me up as a 10-year-old boy, it has been an eventful 11 years with many memories and Spurs will always have a place in my heart.’

The youngster then posted a follow-up tweet announcing his move to League One side Portsmouth: ‘I am glad to sign for such a big club with rich history. Can’t wait to get started with Portsmouth. Let’s go!’

Having trained with the South Coast club over the summer, Oluwayemi has agreed to a one-year deal with Pompey, with the option of a further 12 months (PortsmouthFC).

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s always a shame to see young players depart the club, but it’s nice to see Oluwayemi get picked up by a club and we’ll be keeping an eye on his progress in League One.

Hopefully, he can nail down a first-team spot and make his way into the Nigerian international set-up before too long.
