Spurs hope 19-year-old academy starlet can be a Maddison alternative next season – Alasdair Gold

Alasdair Gold has revealed that there is plenty of excitement at Hotspur Way about Alfie Devine, with some expecting the 19-year-old to be part of the club’s first-team squad next season.

Devine has progressed impressively since arriving at Spurs as a 16-year-old back in 2020, and the youngster showed during his loan spell at Port Vale during the first half of the season just how he is so highly rated at the North London club.

The midfielder looked too good for League One level at times, which is perhaps why Tottenham decided to prematurely end his stay at the club in January and sent him to Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle, where he will share a dressing room with fellow Spurs star Ashley Phillips.

Devine has made a fine start to his spell at Home Park Stadium, picking up an assist in his debut for the club on Saturday as Ian Foster’s men beat Cardiff City 3-1.

Tottenham have high hopes for Alfie Devine

The youngster will be hoping to build on his good start at the club and Gold has revealed that some at Tottenham think he could even be an understudy to James Maddison next season.

The journalist said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “There are such high hopes for him within Spurs and there’s a real feeling that next season, if he has a good season this season he could be a real Maddison alternative and someone to push him as this young player, and everything he’s done so far has matched the expectations.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Even if Devine is not ready to challenge for a first-team spot at Tottenham, the club should consider sending him out on loan to a newly promoted Premier League side next season so that the 19-year-old can get a taste of top-flight football.
