Spurs icon shares what Kane told him about potentially letting Son take penalty

Teddy Sheringham has revealed Harry Kane has not ruled out letting Heung-min Son step up to take a penalty for Tottenham if it was to win the Premier League Golden Boot award.

Son has tallied 21 goals in the Premier League this season and is hot on the heels of top-scorer Mohamed Salah with Spurs having to travel to relegated Norwich later today.

Should the South Korea international tally twice against the Canaries, it could be enough to secure his first Golden Boot with Salah an injury concern for Liverpool’s game against Wolves (Liverpool Echo).

But Tottenham have a lot riding on the fixture in Norfolk and are likely to need at least one point to confirm their place in the Champions League next term ahead of rivals Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Kane reinforced his role as the club’s main penalty taker after netting his 21st spot kick in a row in the narrow win over Burnley last Sunday (Independent).

When asked by former Spurs and England forward Sheringham if he would let strike partner Son take a potential Golden Boot-winning penalty, he allegedly replied that they first needed to get into a comfortable position.

Sheringham told Bookmakers.com (via Evening Standard): “Harry came and spoke to us after the game [a 1-0 win over Burnley], and I put a question to Harry that if we’re [Spurs] beating Norwich two or three-nil, if the game is already won and there’s another penalty, would you let Sonny have it so he could go for the Golden Boot?

“He just laughed, and he said, ‘Let’s win the game first, let’s get in that position’. He’s a goal scorer, he didn’t want to hand over a penalty straight away.”

Ultimately, the team does come first with a place in the Champions League within touching distance, so that needs to be the priority.

But no doubt if Spurs are up and approaching a stage of comfort Kane would hand over any responsibility to Son, especially seeing as they work so well together.
