Club ‘insider’ claims Man City scouting network has created problem for Spurs

Tottenham ‘insider’ John Wenham, has insisted that Spurs are expanding their scouting department to overcome Manchester City’s dominance in London.

Man City have become famed for its scouting network and academy over recent years, which has produced players like Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho, with the latter being from London.

It was reported by inews last month that Spurs are set to beef up their scouting operation in the North West and Yorkshire, with the North London club’s focus now said to be on football hotbeds such as Merseyside, Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield.

The report revealed that Tottenham will appoint a new scout, who will work closely with Chris Perkins, Tottenham’s head of emerging talent, and follow up on key targets and compile lists of potential recruits from the area.

Wenham has now explained that with City poaching the best young talent from London, Spurs have been forced to take the fight to the likes of City in their own backyard.

He told Football Insider regarding Tottenham’s latest move: “This is something that already happens and we are just expanding on it.

“The problem for Tottenham and other London clubs is the scouting network Man City have set up.

“I think they have made 20 youth signings in the last three or four years with 16 of them coming from the London region.

“They are picking off the players Tottenham, Arsenal, West Ham, Palace, would have signed up in previous years.

“It is very, very frustrating because we are missing out on a lot of top talent.

“This is why we are broadening our search because there are other quality youth players out there. I have no problem with this whatsoever.”

Spurs Web Opinion

If we are to compete with the likes of City over the long-term, we certainly need to improve our scouting and the academy set-up.

We are not going to be able to go toe-to-toe with the likes of City in the transfer market. So finding the best young talent in the country and helping them develop, is quite crucial.
