Spurs ‘insider’ hints youngster could sign new contract then go out on loan

Tottenham ‘insider’ John Wenham has revealed that he expects Dilan Markanday to sign a new contract with the club and then head out on loan in January.

The 20-year-old forward, who has tallied 11 goals and five assists in the Premier League 2 this term, has reportedly been attracting plenty of interest from a host of Championship and Scottish Premiership clubs.

Markanday has entered the final year of his contract and could see it expire at the end of the campaign, meaning Spurs are at risk of losing one of the club’s brightest prospects (Sky Sports Transfer Centre – at 22:48 on November 30).

However, Wenham feels speculation of an exit should be dismissed and believes Markanday will come to an agreement of fresh terms soon before leaving on a short-term loan in the January transfer window.

He told Football Insider: “I fully expect he will stay at Tottenham. I think with the interviews he’s given over the last weeks and months have very much been an indication of that.

“He said something like he wants to be here for the next 15 years. I know he’s a Tottenham fan as well.

“I expect something will be worked out. This is just his agent doing his job and trying to get the best deal for his client.

“He’s consistently improved over the last 18-months and I’m sure all parties will come to an agreement that reflects that.

“Any links with a permanent move are hard to believe, as I said I think it’s just the agent doing his job.

“I fully expect Markanday to sign a new contract before heading out on loan in January.”

Markanday made his senior debut for Spurs earlier this season in the Europa Conference League defeat to Vitesse Arnhem. In doing so, the young forward became the first British Asian to play a competitive game for the club’s first team.

Markanday’s contract situation has got a lot of people wondering what is to come, but the feeling appears to be he will sign a fresh deal before heading out on loan.

He has thrived in the reserves this season but a loan could be extremely beneficial for his development as he would be constantly exposed to a first-team environment.
