Report: Spurs keen on Serie A midfielder whose first choice is Barcelona

Tottenham Hotspur hold an interest in signing Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, according to Italian news outlet Foot Mercato.

The report claims that the 26-year-old has already spoken to Barcelona manager Xavi about the prospect of moving to the Catalan giants and has made it his preferred destination if he ends up leaving Fiorentina this summer.

Amrabat’s agent is also in ongoing discussions with fellow La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid, who are also keen on the Moroccan international who impressed during his country’s World Cup campaign where they made it to the semi-final of the tournament before being eliminated by eventual runners-up France.

Alongside Tottenham, Bayern Munich are also keen on the player with Fiorentina said to be prepared to sell if an offer arrives in the region of €25-30million (£21.4-£25.6million).

Amrabat has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona with the midfielder said to be a potential replacement for lynchpin Sergio Busquets, who is leaving the club this summer after 15 years (Daily Mail).

Amrabat has already hinted he wants to play in the Premier League

He recently hinted that he was open to a move to the Premier League at some stage in his career, but also mentioned the prospect of playing in Spain is also of interest to him.

He told the Daily Mail: “Of course, the Premier League is a fantastic league, one of the strongest in the world.

“It would be nice to play there one day, but it’s not that I want only to go to England, because Spain is nice, Serie A is a nice league.

“Football has changed a lot, it’s more physical, you have more to be an athlete, the tempo and intensity is higher.

“Of course, in England the intensity is very high, so I think it could suit me.”

Amrabat could have already been a Tottenham player if Fiorentina had not decided to pull the plug on a transfer in the January 2022 window, however, they instead ended up with Rodrigo Bentancur which has proven to be a shrewd piece of business by Fabio Paratici.

One thing is clear, the midfield pairing of Pierre-Emile Hobjerg and Oliver Skipp simply does not work, both players are too similar in their style of play and Tottenham need more energy in the middle of the pitch with a player who can make things happen in the final third.
