Spurs legend becomes player-coach for the 2021/22 season

Rangers have revealed that Jermain Defoe has signed a one-year contract extension with the club, but not solely as a striker.

The former Tottenham Hotspur goalscorer has signed up to become a player-coach for the Scottish champions next time out.

Defoe played an important role in Steven Gerrard’s side winning their iconic unbeaten 55th league title this season.

The legend himself claimed that he did not expect to fall in love with Rangers as he has done over the past couple of years, thanking the manager, chairman and board for the opportunity given to him in this new role.

Since joining Rangers, Defoe has netted 32 goals in 72 games, as well as racking up another 10 assists in that time (TransferMarkt).

During his Tottenham days, the former England frontman managed an impressive 143 goals in 362 games, including another 31 assists.

However, Defoe was never able to win a senior trophy with the Lilywhites, something he has been able to tick off his bucket list since moving to Scotland.
