Spurs legend believes 50-year-old manager is the ‘right fit’ to replace Conte

Clive Allen believes that Brendan Rodgers has the experience and know-how to get Tottenham back on track next season.

According to many recent reports, Julian Nagelsmann, Arne Slot, Luis Enrique and Vincent Kompany appear to be some of the names on Tottenham’s shortlist to replace Antonio Conte (Fabrizio Romano – Here We Go Podcast).

However, the speculation linking Rodgers with the Tottenham hot seat refuses to go away.

Football Insider were the first to report nearly a month ago the 50-year-old is looking like the right fit for Spurs and that there is a ‘good chance’ the Lilywhites will move for him in the summer.

Journalist Graeme Bailey said on Talking Transfers Podcast just last week that Rodgers cannot be ruled out from the race as Daniel Levy remains a fan of the recently departed Leicester boss.

ESPN subsequently claimed on Monday that while it is not clear if the Northern Irishman is on Spurs’ wishlist, the club have held ‘internal talks’ about him.

Allen believes that Rodgers might be the man to instil an attacking style of play at Tottenham and get the club moving in the right direction.

When asked who should replace Antonio Conte, the former Tottenham striker told talkSPORT: “It’s a really difficult question.

“I think at the moment, it will all unfold at the end of the season where they finish, and what competitions they’re playing in next season.

“For me, at the moment Brendan Rodgers, for me I feel might be the right type of fit for where we are as a club at the moment.

“I would just like to see someone who really understands the Premier League, who can come to the football club and I think put the team into a style of play that they can adapt to, and they will flourish in.

“The style of play at times is incredible but at other times, is all over the place.”

Rodgers would certainly not be my first choice but that does not mean that he would be a bad appointment or that he cannot succeed.

However, this myth about the 50-year-old being the man to implement an attacking style of play needs to be busted as he became quite a bit more pragmatic during his time at Leicester.

If Tottenham’s priority is to employ a possession-based, high-pressing style of play, Rodgers is not the man who the club should turn to ahead of the likes of Kompany and Enrique.
