Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt has claimed that Christian Eriksen’s time in North London will end on a sour note.
The Dane wasted no time following the Champions League final defeat to Liverpool in June to reveal he wanted to leave the club to seek a new challenge whilst also admitting that he would be interested in hearing from Real Madrid (Ekstra Bladet).
Eriksen is out of contract at the end of the season and will become a free agent in the summer unless he agrees to sign a new deal; which appears to be unlikely.
Thorstvedt believes that it would be a disaster if the 27-year-old walked away for nothing with the upcoming January transfer window representing the club’s last chance to receive a transfer fee.
The former Ajax playmaker can begin talks with European clubs in January over a pre-contract deal.
“There has been a lot of talk that it was good that they got to keep Eriksen – yeah right,” he told Norwegian news outlet Nettavisen.
“It is a disaster for Tottenham to be left with the beard in the mailbox as they now do. A player with that value they must sell if he does not want to be in the club.
“He might have hoped that one of the big clubs in Spain would pick him up, but that didn’t happen.
“I think Tottenham had an offer for Eriksen, but he refused to go to the clubs that would bid on him and which Tottenham would sell to.
The Norwegian is unsure whether Real Madrid or Barcelona will make a fresh approach for his services.
“I think so, but it’s not obvious,” he added.
“He has had a safe and good environment for a long time with a lot of confidence.
“How does he react in a new competitive situation? It is hard to say. But I think Christian Eriksen is good. What he does now is not representative of his level.
“What has been a fantastic Tottenham chapter for Christian Eriksen ends in a sour way. I don’t think there will be any doubt about that.”
