Spurs legend blames Gareth Bale’s agent for winger’s Real Madrid plight

Tottenham legend Graham Roberts believes Gareth Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett is to blame for the Welshman’s predicament at Real Madrid.

No one can doubt that Bale has been a success at Madrid since the Spanish giants broke the world transfer record to sign him from Spurs in 2013.

The Welshman has sealed his legacy by playing a key part in Los Blancos’ four Champions League wins, including producing what was arguably the greatest goal ever in a final against Liverpool in 2018.

However, the 31-year-old has been frozen out of the first-team picture by Zinedine Zidane with the Frenchman claiming that Bale expressed a desire not to be included in Real Madrid’s squad to face Manchester City in the Champions League this evening and was subsequently left out (BBC Sport).

Reports indicate that Madrid are keen to get the former Tottenham man off their wage bill (Marca) but Barnett has already insisted that his client wishes to see out his contract at Madrid, which has two more years left to run (BBC Sport).

The Daily Mirror’s Darren Lewis took to social media to voice his frustration at Bale wasting his career on the Madrid bench.

Responding to Lewis’ tweet, Roberts insisted that Barnett could have heavily influenced the pacy winger’s decision.

Bale is not a young player to be complaining about having negative influences or being the victim of bad advice from his agent. One cannot be judgemental of his decision to see out his contract at Madrid if he feels he has achieved what he set out to in his footballing career. However, he has to own the decision and it is one he might well come to regret a few years into retirement.
