Spurs legend Ledley King names the one player he was always worried would embarrass him

Tottenham Hotspur legend Ledley King has admitted Thierry Henry is the only player who he ever felt could get the better of him, even going as far as to say that the Arsenal man was capable of embarrassing him on his day.

Ledley King is a modern icon at Tottenham, having been the last captain to lift a trophy with the club and leading the team for many years after emerging from the club’s academy.

He went on to make 322 appearances for the Lilywhites over the years, registering 13 goals and eight assists (Transfermarkt).

King is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in Tottenham’s history, and is considered one of the best centre-backs of the Premier League era. Were it not for a string of injury issues, King would likely have had an even more impressive career for both club and country.

Who was Ledley King worried about playing against?

Very few players got the better of King, but there was one opponent he feared the most. While speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE podcast, King revealed Thierry Henry is the only player who really had him worried.

He said: “Henry was the best striker for me in the Premier League. He drifts all over the pitch. Out there on the left wing, you can’t go out there. When he comes inside, gets a head of steam, he’s dribbling, that’s a problem for you. Could run in behind you, skilful, strong, he had everything.

“He was the one player, the one striker, I felt could embarrass me if I have an off day. Other than that, didn’t really feel like that [about anyone else].”

Fair play, if you’re going to be afraid of anyone, Thierry Henry is about as scary as attackers can get. It’s just a shame he played for Arsenal, but you have to admit he was absolutely world-class.
