Spurs legend not sure if two players from Conte’s starting eleven are good enough

Graham Roberts has questioned whether Tottenham have enough quality in the wing-back areas to challenge the teams at the top.

Antonio Conte has wasted little time in implementing his unique system since taking over at Spurs two weeks ago.

In both of his games in charge against Vitesse Arnhem and Everton, the Italian has gone with a 3-4-3 system, with Emerson Royal and Sergio Reguilon operating as wing-backs.

The pair will certainly be expected to deliver a lot of Tottenham’s attacking output given how vital wing-backs are in Conte’s system.

Both players spurned gilt-edged chances to find the back of the net in Goodison Park last Sunday.

While Emerson seems to be growing with confidence with each game he plays, Reguilon’s performances have not quite lived up to expectations in recent weeks.

Roberts has questioned if the Spaniard and Brazilian are good enough for the new Spurs boss to take the team to where he wants to.

The Tottenham legend told ThisIsFutbol: “Right-back, left-back, are they good enough to win you trophies? We’re not sure.”

Reguilon’s pace and crossing ability (which are both excellent) makes some people overlook his lack of quality on the ball.

While the Spaniard can stretch defences with his pace and deliver good balls given time and space, he is certainly nowhere as tidy in possession as Emerson is.

However, the former Real Madrid man has not played much as a wing-back and he deserves some time to get used to the demands of playing in this new system.
