Spurs legend speaks out on loss at Watford

The Tottenham suffered their first defeat of the season yesterday, surrendering their 100% win record to fellow serial winners, Watford.

Harry Kane, in particular, cut a frustrated figure for Spurs and it took until first-half stoppage time for a shot to be registered on target.

Spurs led the game after an early second half own-goal, but Watford came from behind with two set-piece headers to claim all three points.

The defeat meant the end of their 100% record, and Pochettino’s side, who began the day knowing a good enough win could take them top of the Premier League table, must make do with fifth place for now, a point behind champions Manchester City.

Next up for Spurs is the visit of unbeaten Liverpool, who are also get to concede a goal.

Tottenham legend Jermain Defoe said this on Sky Sports: “You come here and you know it’s going to be difficult as Watford have started the season well. But when you have won at Old Trafford and have made a good start and want to be title contenders you have to come to places like this and win.

“They will be disappointed because it’s time now for this group of players to achieve something.

“The hardest thing at this level is to be consistent because when you win at Old Trafford you can become a bit complacent going into the next game. That’s when the leaders in the group have to lead.

“Look at the set-pieces and if you concede one then the leaders say ‘OK, it’s not happening again’.”

Is Defoe right? Did the leaders in the Spurs squad need to step up?
