Spurs legend to have movie made about him; lead-actor search is on

Tottenham legend Paul Gascoigne has admitted to The Daily Mirror that a movie about his life and career is currently in the works.

It is revealed that the film will not only delve into the various moments of glory and agony Gazza endured on the pitch but also his struggles with addiction off it.

The 53-year-old is widely considered one of the most talented footballers that England has ever produced but his troubles since retirement have been well documented.

It is revealed that the team working on the film will use the former Spurs star’s memories to craft the script and will also use parts from ‘Gazza: My Story’ – the book the legendary midfielder wrote 16 years ago with biographer Hunter Davies.

Gascoigne revealed that the film makers are currently looking for an actor to play him.

This announcement comes as a documentary about the midfielder’s time at Lazio, as well as his performances in Italia 90 and Euro 96, is due out.

Speaking about the documentary, the former England star said: “The documentary is out in November. The makers have spoken to me and my family.

“But there are backers looking at a film and trying to find someone to play me. I will guide them and read the script, it will be about my entire life. They will use my books.”

Gascoigne insisted that the film will not pull any punches and will tell his entire story.

He added: “Let’s face it, I have nothing to hide. It has all been in the press, the good and bad.”

The Mirror claim that Sean Bean, Jack O’Connell, Paul Mescal, Jimmy Nail and TV presenting duo, Ant & Dec, are all contenders to land Gascoigne’s role in the film.

Spurs Web Opinion

A movie about Gascoigne’s life has been a long time coming as the 53-year-old was one of the most entertaining footballers England has ever produced. Additionally, he was also one of the most colourful characters ever to reach the top of his profession. The film will give as much insight into topics like mental health and addiction as it would into the life and pressures of elite sportsmen.
