Spurs-linked creative midfielder signs new contract at current club

Julian Brandt has all but put an end to speculation linking him with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, after signing a new contract at Borussia Dortmund.

The 26-year-old joined Dortmund in 2019 from league rivals Bayer Leverkusen and has gone on to make 162 appearances for the German giants, scoring 29 goals and registering 30 assists during that time (Transfermarkt).

Brandt has been in fine form this season, scoring nine goals and contributing five assists across 35 games in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The German midfielder had been linked with Spurs just last month (DW). Subsequent reports from 90 Min suggested the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Newcastle United were interested in the player.

Despite Dortmund’s best efforts to tie Brandt to a new contract, there appeared to be some issues in extending his current deal with the player thought to be considering his options amid reluctance to commit to a long-term deal (Sven Westerschulze).

Now, all that seems to be at an end after the club announced Brandt had put pen to a paper on a new deal which will run through to the summer of 2026.

In another tweet from the Borussia Dortmund official account, Brandt is quoted as saying: “I’m looking forward to the next few years in black and yellow and I’m sure that together we’ll have the opportunity to celebrate something great.”

Spurs Web Opinion

One would think that this new contract signals the end of any hopes for Spurs (or any club for that matter) in signing Brandt. It’s a shame, as Brandt is a quality player who would have given us the exact kind of creativity we need in midfield, but we will now have to explore other options.

To be fair, with the other clubs thought to be interested in Brandt, we would have found it difficult to compete for his signature anyway.
