Spurs-linked Piero Hincapie confirms talks were held over potential January transfer

Rumoured Tottenham target Piero Hincapie has revealed that clubs did hold talks with Bayer Leverkusen during last month’s transfer window regarding his availability.

Hincapie was linked with a move to Spurs during the January transfer window, with some sources even alleging at the time that the Lilywhites made an offer of €25m (£21.9m) for the 21-year-old (BILD).

Not only did the centre-back end up staying at the BayArena but he also put pen to paper on a new contract that runs until 2027.

So, if Antonio Conte’s men are to reignite their interest in Hincapie in the summer, they may have to break the bank, with Fabrizio Romano revealing that there is no release clause in the defender’s new deal.

Football Insider also suggested a couple of days ago that Leverkusen will demand a fee of over £50m for the player.

Hincapie has now revealed that a January exit from the Bundesliga club was a possibility but he insisted it was not something he personally got involved in.

The Ecuadorian told Studio Futbol: “My agent says there were talks. I never got involved in the subject. It’s not something to make me dizzy but to know that there are clubs interested in me and that I have to prove even more so that one day it becomes a reality.”

One can understand why Hincapie is not in a hurry to leave Leverkusen as he is still very young and has only spent 18 months in Europe so far.

However, I suspect the main intention of the Bundesliga club in tying him down is to offload him for a bigger fee in the summer. I expect plenty of clubs from the Premier League, including Spurs, to enter the race for the 21-year-old at the end of the season.
