Spurs-linked striker now has 24 goals and assists in just 19 games this season

Walid Cheddira, who has been linked with a possible move to Tottenham over recent months, has earned high praise from Bari legend Igor Protti for the improvements he has made to his game this season.

Some eyebrows were raised when Serie B News reported in October that Spurs were weighing up a January move for Cheddira, who is currently plying his trade in the Italian second tier.

However, the 25-year-old’s form since then has demonstrated just why Antonio Conte’s men might have had their eye on him, with the striker having found the back of the net 18 times and registered six assists across all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).

Gianluca di Marzio revealed back in December that Nottingham Forest were also considering a move for the forward, who was said to be valued by Barri at around €6m-€7m (£5.1m-£6m).

However, Cheddira ended up staying put at Stadio San Nicola in January, a decision that certainly comes as a major boost to Bari’s hopes of winning promotion to the top flight.

Protti has now suggested that the Moroccan has matured as a player since the start of the season.

The former Italian striker said (via TuttoMercatoWeb): “Cheddira is growing tremendously. He has improved a lot since last season, especially from a goalscoring point of view. He has always been devastating. But, this year, he has made a big leap in maturity and performance.”

Cheddira might be taking the Italian second tier by storm but that does not mean the striker is ready to make a step up to the Premier League.

Conte is not known to trust players who are unproven at the top level and so, the Spurs head coach will likely want an attacker of a higher calibre than the Bari star next summer.
