Spurs loanee returns to club for rehabilitation after suffering ankle injury

Crewe Alexandra have confirmed that on-loan winger J’Neil Bennett will return to Tottenham to undergo a period of rehabilitation on an ankle injury.

The 19-year-old, who joined the Railwaymen on a short-term loan in the summer, made 10 appearances for the club, scoring once in a 2-0 win against Burton Albion.

However, Bennett has seen his loan deal with the League One club come to a premature end after suffering an ankle problem in training, which is thought will rule him out for between 10 and 12 weeks.

The injury will see him out of action beyond his current loan agreement, which ends in January, and he will now return to Spurs to recover and regain fitness.

Crewe manager David Artell labelled the loss of Bennett as a blow for the player and his team, but hinted the club could revisit another deal in the future if his recovery goes well.

He told the club’s official website: “J’Neil, unfortunately, suffered an ankle ligament injury in training and he will be out for a medium-term and that will go beyond his current loan deal.

“We have spoken to J’Neil and Tottenham and it was agreed that he would return there to do his rehab.

“J’Neil is a great lad and his personality is infectious around the place. He is a good young player and good to work with and it’s a blow for us and a blow for him.

“It is something we could revisit in the future, we are looking at a lot of things for January and if not then with him then he is out of contract in the summer.”

Injuries are never a good thing, especially for young players who are away from the club and looking to gain more senior experience. Hopefully, Bennett will be able to recover well and get back on track with another loan move at some point.
