Spurs midfielder broke four-year Champions League record on Tuesday

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg broke a four-year Champions League record in Tuesday night’s clash with Frankfurt.

Spurs were frustrated by the German side in a 0-0 draw in their Group D match at the Frankfurt Stadion. Despite dominating possession and registering 11 attempts (UEFA), the North London club just couldn’t land the killer blow to win the game.

The result leaves Spurs second in their group with four points from three games. They are two points behind leaders Sporting Lisbon, level on points with Frankfurt in third place, and just one point ahead of bottom team Marseille.

Group D is proving to be a tough one to navigate for all involved, and Spurs will now be relying on producing top performances at home to Frankfurt and Sporting in order to have a chance of winning the group.

It may not have been the best night for the Spurs attackers, but it was a vastly improved performance all round, after a disappointing defeat to fierce rivals Arsenal at the weekend.

One player in particular who can be happy with his performance against Frankfurt is Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. A good start to the season has seen Hojbjerg contribute two goals to the Spurs cause already (Transfermarkt).

Against Frankfurt, Hojbjerg also managed to break a record Champions League record that had been standing since October 2018.

According to WhoScored, Hojbjerg “won possession in the midfield third on 12 occasions against Frankfurt,” the first player to do so in four years in the competition.

Spurs Web Opinion

I could wax lyrical about Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg all day. The fact this man gets stick from the fanbase and there are people out there who would be happy to see him dropped, or even sold, is baffling.

Hojbjerg is incredibly reliable, an absolute workhorse, and is very important to Tottenham’s attempts to turn defence into attack. He is severely underrated, but hopefully he can keep proving people wrong this season.
