Spurs must sign this player up to a new deal but only have six days to do it

Tottenham Hotspur are chasing some big names in the summer transfer market as they look to push on next season in the Premier and Champions Leagues.

However, I believe that one of the most important deals to be done lies right on their doorstep in the form of 34-year-old Fernando Llorente.

While Llorente does not offer a long-term solution of any kind, he has proved himself to be a vital cog in the Spurs machine.

Obviously, Harry Kane is the club’s lead striker and goal scorer, and no one is going to come in and take his starting spot.

With this comes a problem. Few strikers at the top of their game are going to want to come and play understudy at Spurs.

This leaves two clear solutions, either Spurs bring in a young and hungry up-and-comer, or they use someone coming towards the end of their career.

What Llorente does is offer Tottenham something completely different from the likes of Kane, Son, and Moura. He offers an aerial threat and a difficult physical presence for defenders.

Whether it’s starting the match and feeding knockdowns to the faster players around him or piling on the pressure late game by getting in the box, Llorente offers a much-needed direct approach.

The Spaniard scored vital Champions League goals against Dortmund and Man City in the knockout stages, as well as creating Moura’s third against Ajax.

In a transfer window where I believe central midfield and right-back should be priorities, I think Spurs simply must sign Llorente up to a one-year extension.

His current contract runs out in six days, so the Lilywhites will have to move fast if they want to prevent any other clubs from snapping him up (TransferMarkt).
