Spurs never came close to signing midfielder despite months of rumours – Journalist

Journalist Matteo Moretto claims Tottenham Hotspur never even came close to signing Conor Gallagher in the summer despite holding an interest in the midfielder.

Conor Gallagher to Tottenham saga

Gallagher was heavily linked with a move to Spurs right from the summer of 2023, but the North London club were unable to get a deal over the line, with the midfielder instead completing a switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer.

Several outlets have indicated over the last month that the Lilywhites never even submitted a formal offer for the 24-year-old (The Telegraph).

In fact, Fabrizio Romano even suggested last month that Ange Postecoglou’s men were only interested in signing the England international on a free transfer in 2025 (Daily Briefing).

Spurs never came close to landing Gallagher

Moretto has now given an update on the matter on Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing, claiming that both Villa and Spurs did show interest in Gallagher.

However, he explained that neither club were close to getting a deal over the line in the recently concluded transfer window.

This was because Chelsea had no intention of letting their academy graduate move to another Premier League side, thus handing Atletico a big advantage.

Spurs Web Opinion

Postecoglou is evidently a fan of Gallagher and if Spurs thought there was even a small chance that Chelsea would sell the midfielder to them, the North London club would have likely tested the waters with a couple of offers.

I still expect Spurs to make a move for a big-money number six in the next two transfer windows to offer competition to Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur.
