Spurs player admits he didn’t know much about loan move until deadline day

After completing a loan move to Derby County on transfer deadline day, Harvey White has said that he is excited about the opportunity to play competitive football in front of big crowds at the League One club.

White had seemingly made a big impression on Antonio Conte, with the Italian describing the midfielder as a ‘really intelligent’ player last month (Football.London).

The Tottenham head coach handed the 21-year-old his Premier League debut in Spurs’ 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park a few weeks ago.

Reports over the last week had indicated that the Lilywhites were looking to send the youngster on loan so that he gets regular football under his belt, with Championship duo, West Bromwich Albion and Luton Town, and League One pair, Oxford United and Barnsley, said to be among those interested (Football Insider).

However, it was Derby who secured the Tottenham academy graduate’s signature, with the North Londoners confirming on transfer deadline day that the midfielder had signed for Paul Warne’s side.

White revealed that the decision was made as soon as he heard of Derby’s interest and expressed his excitement at running out in the club’s colours at Pride Park.

He told the League One club’s official website: “I woke up this (Tuesday) morning and didn’t know much about it other than knowing it was deadline day and hoping something would happen.

“I went to the training ground at Tottenham around midday and within about half hour I heard Derby were interested and was travelling up here.

“The manager spoke to me on the phone and I went from there – his words were very good and I know Derby are a massive club so as soon as I knew there was interest I couldn’t say no really.

“My plan was to always get out and play some first-team football, it’s what young players want to do. The earlier you get out there the more you experience.

“Fighting for three points, playing in front of big crowds like the 30,000 at Pride Park. I wanted to get out and play some men’s football and I’m looking forward to doing that here.”

When asked what he can bring to the table, White responded: “I’m very passionate. I always want to win, I’m a very competitive midfielder that likes to score, assist and stop goals.

“I’m very excited. I’m buzzing to play some football, play in front of the fans and hopefully get this club back to the Championship.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I am glad that Spurs have loaned White to a League One club rather than a Championship side as the priority should be ensuring that the youngster gets regular starts under his belt. The 21-year-old will also feel seamlessly into Derby’s possession-based style of play.
