Spurs player admits that he wasn’t at his best against Aston Villa

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has admitted that his performance against Aston Villa wasn’t one of his best but revealed his delight at managing to walk away with all three points from Villa Park.

The central has had a rather busy week with his wife giving birth to their second child prior to the weekend.

He revealed after the game that he had hardly got any sleep over the past couple of days (Sky Sports).

Aldereireld was at fault for Aston Villa’s first goal when he failed to deal with a deflected cross into the box and ended up stabbing it into his own net beyond the equally confused Hugo Lloris.

He quickly made amends as he struck a thumping half volley past Pepe Reina to level the game, however the Belgian was also somewhat to blame for Villa’s second when he failed to mark Bjorn Engels tight enough which resulted in his compatriot levelling the score.

Alderweireld took to social media to post the following message after the 3-2 win and gave an honest assessment of the match:

Spurs Web Opinion

Our defence looked extremely fragile and Alderweireld like several of our players didn’t have a great outing against Villa. However, the players showed unbelievable character to keep fighting until the end. You could see that they believed until the final whistle that they were going to get a winner.
