Spurs player always believed they would come back to beat Aston Villa

While Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 scoreline against Aston Villa may have looked like a comfortable victory to a neutral, it certainly proved to be anything but after a nervy opening day win.

The visitors took the lead within the first 10 minutes of the game and it was only in the final 15 minutes of the game that Tottenham scored three to take the game out of Villa’s reach.

In fact, many Spurs fans were getting nervy mid-way into the second half as the Lilywhites just weren’t able to get a breakthrough despite creating chance after chance.

However, Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has insisted that he always believed that the team would battle back and get the victory having been in similar situations previously.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Winks said: “I thought the way we handled it and came back from being 1-0 down shows just how good we are, and in typical Spurs fashion.

“I always believed we’d get there. We’ve been in that situation so many times and it’s something you learn to deal with, to be patient and believe. Saturday was no different.”

The 23-year-old also revealed that the team was under a lot of pressure as they were desperate to start the season with three points

He added: “It was a must-win game for us. It was the first game of the season at the new stadium and vital we got the three points. There was a lot of pressure on us as well, but we knew that.

“To get the first three points of the season with a good performance and to get back to winning ways is most important. Everyone is happy.”
