Spurs Player Ratings vs Liverpool

Wilson Palacios - Header

Heurelho Gomes (6) – Why oh why do keepers rush out like that?

Vedran Corluka (8) – Top class, unruffled performance. Had Babel in his ample back pocket giving him plenty of time support Lennon.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto (8) – Excellent game given that he was up against two internationals in Kuyt and Johnson and what a goal!

Ledley King (8) – It’s like getting the Rolls out for a spin. Superb comedy moment when he accidentally tripped Torres in the first half prompting some Spanish handbags.

Sebastien Bassong (8) – A debut verging on the faultless and a cracking goal. Woodgate will have taken notice.

Aaron Lennon (6) – Unusually ineffective I thought. Never took Insua on on the outside. Was double teamed a lot with Babel tracking back.

Luka Modric (7) – Classy and creative as usual but too often marginal to the action rather than central. Nice free kick for Bassong’s goal.

Tom Huddlestone (7) – Good performance overall. One lovely long ball to Lennon in the first half that would be great if it became a trademark. Faded in the last ten, appeared a bit knackered, gave the ball away needlessly a few times.

Wilson Palacios (8) – Man of the match for me. Disciplined, powerful and skilful. Only complaint is that he also gave the ball away towards the end with a few fanny touches.

Robbie Keane (6) – Showed himself a lot and was available to receive the ball from midfield but really should have scored. Appeared more like his old self than he has done of late.

Jermain Defoe (6) – Fought manfully but very rarely came out on top in the battle of little v large. Good effort with one header from a corner. Like everyone, worked his socks off.

  1. Lennon did well earned alot of free kicks or when he ran through 3 players?

Modric was outstanding, he set keane up for some glorious chances.

  2. Will have to agree with most of your ratings.

Thought Modric possibly deserved an 8.

11:16pm : Lennon may have gone passed 3 players but what did he do with the final ball? All flash and no delivery doesn’t make for a higher rating than 6 in my book.

  3. Hudds set up the penalty with his slappy defending before the octopus did the rest, his free kicks are to improve as well; Modric outstanding; Keane…used to convert these chances blind, really bad finishing

  4. Agree with everything except the Modric rating, should have been an 8 or 9. Some of his touches were Messi-like, that flicked cross to Keane when the ball was almost out was awesome.

  5. I think Hudd played well yesterday, better than I’ve seen him last season. Good energy, tackled well, though faded in the second half. Glad to see him get a chance.
I think Bassong goal saved Gomes’ mistake. Hope his confidence won’t suffer.
My MOTM is Assou-Ekotto, great goal and great defending towards the end.

  6. I would add 1 point each to Corluka,Lennon,Mod & Hudd.
Pool should have been joint bottom with Everton & Spurs joint top with Arse(6:1)

  7. Keane really dissapointing, and with our top quality attack we cannot afford to be missing gilt edged goal chances. Still it is early doors, he will sharpen up I hope, but worrying we had to rely on two defenders to get goals. Seems odds on Crouch will start at Hull with Defoe. Palacios for me is quality and priceless and I pray he does not pick up any injuries, players like him and Gerrard are so influential.

  8. Agree with most ratings.
would have rated Bassong above Corluka 7.
Bassong, Lennon and Modric a mark higher.

    One thing Harry got wrong:
Not sure that Keane Defoe was a great partnership. Keane was the better of the 2 yesterday. However Defoe Pav looked the partnership in pre season, it would be good to develop 2 Big/Little pairs. Keane is normally a much better partner, but Pav and Crouch are 2 players that Defoe can actually play with.

Great start, shame the strikers did not score for all their industry.

  9. PS Gomes had a good game and he was left totally exposed when Johnson was allowed to waltz through, yet no-one blames the players who failed to track back or tackle.
Shall we all get on Gomes’s back, until his confidence is shot to pieces again? With a bit of luck the papers will join in again too.

Gomes made the 3rd most amount of saves last year. 3 times more than Reina, Cech and Van de Saar. If you let good players take pot shots they will score. Cech made mush worse errors from fewer attempts at his goal. GET OFF HIS BACK! He’s a great keeper.

  10. Gomes almost cost us the game with a rediculous challenge but I guess he meant well.

Huddlestone worked as hard as I have ever seen and we won the physical battle in midfield which has not always been the case in the past. With this commitment we will do well.

  11. Gomes should get a 4 hardly had any saves to make then a complete howler on the Pen, Johnson was going nowhere.

As for Palacios (9), great performanace broke up Liverpool’s play very well.

Lennon was good, couple of good runs with no end product.

Bassong was very good i couldn’t tell him and king apart, they both played really well, i think it he will be a very good addition to the back line (sorry Dawson)

Modric again was important i would give him an 8, good runs clever passing.

As for Robbie ‘i’ll tarmac your drive’ Keane he should get a 5 at the most, missed some sitter, and ran around like a headless chicken at times.
