Report: Tottenham have now been ‘priced out’ of a move for prolific striker

The Independent have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have now been priced out of a move for Ivan Toney after Brentford informed interested clubs how much they would have to pay for the striker next month.

Over the last few months, a whole host of various outlets have suggested that Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea are set to battle it out for Toney‘s services in January (Daily Express).

According to The Independent’s latest report, while the three London clubs did show interest, Spurs have pulled out of the deal despite having yet to replace Harry Kane who decided to leave for Bayern Munich on the cusp of the new Premier League season earlier in the summer.

Ivan Toney too expensive for Spurs

It is claimed that while the Lilywhites ‘would love to sign’ Toney, they have been priced out of the deal after Brentford demanded a fee of £80m including add-ons for the centre-forward.

The report says that Spurs are now likely to go for younger options, leaving Arsenal and Chelsea to battle it out for Toney, who is set to return from his ban next month.

The publication suggests that given the Blues’ struggles this season and their issues in meeting the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability requirements, the Gunners have now emerged as the favourites for the England international’s signature.

Toney was never a realistic target for Spurs and one could argue that it would not be prudent for Postecoglou’s side to spend £80m on a centre-forward when they are in more desperate need of additions in other areas of the pitch including a central defender and a new midfielder considering both Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are on their way to AFCON next month.
