Spurs receive potential transfer boost after club deem defender ‘no longer essential’

Tottenham Hotspur may have been handed a boost in their rumoured interest in Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij.

The Italian news outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport have claimed the Dutch international could be set to leave the San Siro this summer after the current Serie A champions has been deemed as ‘no longer essential’.

It is said the 30-year-old ‘seemed expendable’ and has ‘several connoisseurs abroad’ with Tottenham said to be one of those keen on his services.

TuttoMercatoWeb reported last month that Spurs along with Newcastle United were keen on de Vrij, who is out of contract at the end of next summer (transfermarkt).

Antonio Conte knows all too well about the qualities of the central defender, having been an almost an ever-present under the former Inter boss last season during their title-winning charge last season.

De Vrij woud be a significant upgrade on Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez, however, the club do need to proritise the signing of a left-sided central defender.

Fabio Paratici knows the Italian market all too well and could look to secure the Dutchman for a sensible price given the short duration left on his current deal.
