Spurs’ Sessegnon reveals why he is getting tired of comparisons with Gareth Bale

Ryan Sessegnon was the latest Tottenham star to take part in the 18-82 Q&A with the club’s official website this week, in which players are asked to answer 18 lifestyle questions from a selection of 82.

The former Fulham man revealed some interesting personal details in the interview, as well as implying that he is tired of constant comparisons between himself and former Spurs star, Gareth Bale.

Comparisons with Bale are natural given that the Welshman arrived in North London as a left-back before going on to shine further forward.

Jose Mourinho has revealed that he sees Sessegnon as a player with the qualities to play higher up the pitch rather than at left-back (Football London).

While the 20-year-old admitted that he was flattered by the comparisons with Bale, he insisted that he would like to forge his own path at the club.

When asked to name the one question that he is always asked during interviews, the wide man said: “It’s ‘How does it feel to be compared to Gareth Bale?’ I get asked that question all the time.

“Each interview just seems to mention comparisons between me and Gareth Bale for some reason.

“Of course, he is a player that I have looked up to and it’s flattering to be compared to someone like him but at the same time, you want to be your own person.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Sessegnon obviously has a long way to go to warrant the comparisons with Bale but one can certainly understand where people are coming from with that link. However, unlike Bale, I believe that Sessegnon’s future will be at wing-back. I do not think he is good enough on the ball to play as a wide forward or a wide midfielder. His best asset is his pace and his ability to get up and down the pitch and I believe he has the attributes to evolve into a top wing-back for Spurs with a bit more experience under his belt.
