Spurs star insists squad want to win PL and Champions League this year

Tottenham Hotspur’s Emerson Royal has commented on the mentality of all the players and staff at the club, and claims sights are set on winning every competition they are involved in.

Despite some shaky performances so far this season, Spurs have started strong and find themselves well-placed in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

With just one defeat in the league, Spurs currently sit third in the table and have enjoyed one of their best starts to a campaign in the club’s history.

After the 3-2 win against Frankfurt on Wednesday night, Spurs are now top of Group D in the Champions League, and could secure qualification for the knockout stages with a win at home to Sporting next week.

Since Antonio Conte took over at Spurs last November, there’s been a clear shift in the mentality of all those at the club. The reputation as a team who couldn’t go the distance has slowly been eradicated, and many suspect silverware could be on the cards in the near future.

Speaking to AS, Emerson Royal believes just that, and insists the club are on a mission to win any and every competition they are involved in.

He said: “Well, we are working for that [competing for the title]. Last season the coach spoke with us and told us that this season was going to be different, that we were going to fight for big things.

“And we too, we have the mentality to win everything we are contesting. The first step is taken by the mentality, believing that we can and that is what we are doing.

“We are going to continue working, yes, we want to win the Premier League and we want to win the Champions League.”

While the performances so far this season have been far from convincing, it’s promising that Spurs find themselves challenging at the top of the Premier League table and topping their Champions League group without hitting their stride. Any trophy would be nice this season, and if anyone can achieve that, it’s Antonio Conte.
