Spurs star insists team has ‘the quality to win trophies’ this season

Lucas Moura has insisted that Tottenham Hotspur have everything in place to win trophies in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge.

Tottenham have certainly shown that they mean business so far during the summer transfer window, with the club making the bulk of their signings early to ensure the new players can get a full pre-season under their belt ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Conte’s men will be hoping to continue from where they left off towards the end of last season when they went on an impressive run to get back into the Champions League.

Moura believes that Spurs have what it takes to compete on multiple fronts during the upcoming season, and declared that the team’s objective is to end the club’s trophy drought.

The winger told Football.London: “This season we can see another Tottenham and I hope we achieve our targets because we have a quality squad and a great manager. We have the quality to win trophies and this is our objective.

“We know how difficult it is because we play in the Premier League and there are a lot of teams that can win. Also, the Champions League we know is not easy but we have a great squad.

“We have stars like Harry and Sonny. We have a manager who is one of the best. We have a structure, an amazing training ground, an unbelievable stadium, great fans. We have everything we need to achieve. Now it depends on us. We need to work hard and show on the pitch we deserve to win.”

However, Moura admitted that just having a quality squad does not ensure success and that the players have to earn their right to compete with the top teams next season.

When asked if Tottenham now have a better squad than they did when they reached the Champions League final three years ago, the 29-year-old responded: “It’s very difficult to say. Football is not like this. If we analyse player-by-player maybe this season we are better but only on paper. Football is not like this. Every season has a different history. We need to show this on the pitch,” he said.

“But I believe we can arrive again in the final and have a different finish, lifting the trophy but for this to happen it is a hard way. We need to work very hard. That season, that game against Ajax was unbelievable. The best season, the best game of my career. I will never forget it. It will be in my heart together.”

Spurs Web Opinion

With the squad Conte is now building, I fully expect us to take the FA Cup and League Cup seriously next season – something we arguably have been guilty of not doing over recent years.

Winning one of those trophies and finishing third next season will represent a brilliant season for Spurs and would give us a lot to build on for the 2023/24 campaign, where a title challenge could be more realistic.
