Spurs star promises to take care of Harry Kane after World Cup penalty miss

Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty has revealed in an in-house interview (via Football.London) that he will support Harry Kane upon his return to the club after the heartbreak of his penalty miss in the World Cup.

England faced France in the last eight looking to book a place in the semi-finals. Aurelien Tchouameni put the French in front after 17 minutes with a fine strike, but Kane levelled from the spot early in the second half to take his international tally to 53 goals in 80 appearances (Transfermarkt).

Olivier Giroud then gave France the lead once more with ten minutes to go, but in the dying embers of the game, Mason Mount won a penalty for England and Kane stepped up. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, with Kane sending the ball over the bar.

It’s a moment that Kane described on Twitter as leaving him “absolutely gutted,” and an experience that will “take some time” to recover from.

Now, Doherty has explained how he and his Spurs teammates will support Kane when he returns to the club after his break.

He said: “I thought England played well against France, to be fair, and France didn’t really get going. I feel like France had one attempt at goal and scored twice – the first wasn’t even a half-chance.

“England looked dangerous. Harry obviously scored the first penalty, and then everyone knows what happened.

“That’s tough on him. These things happen. Pretty much everyone who knows ‘H’ would have put their house on him scoring, everyone knows he’s the best man for the job.”

On what he and his teammates can do, Doherty added: “It will be tough for him now but when he gets back in, we’ll rally around him and get him up and running again. He’ll be fine. He’s one of the strongest characters, mentally, that we all know.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s been great to hear all the Spurs players talking about how they will support Harry Kane in light of what happened. Honestly, though, I think Kane will be absolutely fine. He’s very rarely let anything affect his game and I’m sure he will be firing on all cylinders when he returns to club action.
