Spurs star receives late international call-up – Will not train under Conte this week

Steven Bergwijn will not be at Hotspur Way to work with Antonio Conte and his coaching staff over the next two weeks as the winger has now been recalled to the Netherlands squad.

The bulk of Tottenham’s first-team squad have joined up with their international sides this week, meaning that Conte will have to make do with working with just ten first-team players over the next two weeks.

It certainly is not ideal for the Italian, who would want to get his ideas across and familiarise his players quickly with the demands of his system.

It has now been confirmed that he will be without another player in Bergwijn, who has been recalled into Louis van Gaal’s squad.

The Spurs winger was not in the initial list of players to be called up but the Dutch FA have now revealed that, following injuries to Steven Berghuis, Joel Drommel and Jurrien Timber, the Spurs man has been recalled along with Valencia’s Jasper Cillessen and Ajax’s Devyne Rensch.

Bergwijn has not played a single minute in Conte’s first two matches in charge of Spurs against Vitesse Arnhem and Everton.

Spurs Web Opinion

While it is always an honour for a player to be called up to the national side, I suspect Bergwijn would have preferred to stay at Hotspur Way and use the next couple of weeks to make an impression on Conte and his staff. Given that the 24-year-old has only been called up as a replacement, it seems unlikely that Van Gaal will give him many minutes.
