Spurs star refuses to rule out a return to his former club this summer

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has refused to rule out the possibility of returning to Ajax this summer, amidst speculation regarding his future.

Vertonghen has not been a regular in the Tottenham starting eleven this season and the defender has at times performed below the level we have expected from him in previous campaigns.

The 32-year-old’s contract with the club runs out in the summer and there is no indication that he is close to penning a new deal to remain in North London.

The experienced defender has been linked with a move to a move to Inter Milan (Standard) as well as return to Ajax (De Telegraaf) in the summer.

The Belgian international has now dropped his clearest hint yet that he could be on his way out of North London as he refused to rule out a return to Ajax in an interview with the Dutch media on Saturday.

Speaking to OpVier (as relayed by Voetbal Primeur), Vertonghen said: “A return to Ajax? Who knows. That is sort of in the planning.”

As much as I wish I was wrong, I believe we’ve likely seen the last of Vertonghen in a Tottenham shirt already. He needed to have a strong finish to the season in order to convince Jose that he deserved a new deal and I don’t believe he’s managed to do that so far.
