Spurs star reveals he was well enough to report for international duty after illness

Tottenham Hotspur had to make do without the services of Toby Alderweireld for Sunday’s win against Aston Villa.

The club confirmed ahead of the match at Villa Park that the central defender was absent due to an unspecified illness.

The 32-year-old was left on the bench for Tottenham’s humiliating 3-0 defeat against Dinamo Zagreb which saw the Croatian outfit end the club’s hopes of Europa League success.

His last appearance came during the North London derby defeat at Arsenal, where he played the full 90 minutes at the Emirates.

Alderweireld has recovered in time to link up with Belgium ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Wales, Czech Republic and Belarus.

Belgium are next in action tomorrow evening in a match which could see Alderweireld face Gareth Bale, Joe Rodon and Ben Davies in Leuven.

The defender took to Instagram to post a photo of himself reporting for duty with his country and claimed that the fact he was well enough to do so was made even sweeter by Spurs’ 2-0 win against Dean Smith’s side.

His caption read: “Glad to be well enough to join up with the @belgianreddevils. Always an honour and even better after a @spursofficial win.”
