Spurs star reveals what Jose Mourinho said to him on video chat before signing

Steven Bergwijn has revealed how Jose Mourinho video called him ahead of his switch from PSV to Tottenham in January.

Speaking to Voetbal International, Bergwijn revealed what happened when Mourinho Facetimed him regarding the potential transfer to Spurs.

Bergwijn made the move from Holland to London in January in a deal believed to be worth around £27m (Transfermarkt).

“The image people have of him is exactly what he wants. That makes him unique, I think,” he said.

“Mourinho just wants to win; he radiates that in everything. At the same time, he loves his players.”

The Dutchman made an immediate impression at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he smashed home a volley on his Premier League debut in a 2-0 win against Manchester City (BBC).

“Before the transfer was completed, he called me, we Facetimed.

“He wanted to know everything about me and of course when I would come and when I would train for the first time.

“Mourinho has a lot of confidence in me, which is partly why I felt at home so quickly, I think,” added Bergwijn.

The 22-year-old was forced out of action following an ankle injury in March and was granted permission to return to Holland for the birth of his child.

However, Bergwijn is back fully fit and scored Tottenham’s first goal following the suspension of the season when he netted after 26 minutes against Manchester United last night.

Spurs Web Opinion

For the first time since the Dutch winger arrived, we are going to get a glimpse of Bergwijn lining up alongside Harry Kane and Heung-min Son. The winger certainly hit the ground running but was another player who picked up an injury before the campaign was put on pause. I think we are all looking forward to see what he can offer.
