Tottenham Hotspur academy striker, Kion Etete, has revealed that former Spurs striker, Jermain Defoe, provided valuable advice to the young players at the club about what it takes to be a consistent goalscorer at the top-level.
Etete joined the Tottenham’s academy last summer from Notts County following a successful trial at North London.
He has enjoyed a fantastic season for the club’s Under-18s, netting eight goals and two assists in thirteen appearances this season (transfermarkt.com).
Big things are expected of the 18-year-old at North London with Football.London’s Alasdair Gold even suggesting that Etete could be the man to fill the void left by Fernando Llorente.
Defoe, who was prolific in front of goal during his two spells at White Hart Lane, is just the man to give advice to an up and coming striker like Etete.
The teenager was appreciative of the words of wisdom that the veteran striker shared with the youngsters at the club.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Etete said: “Jermain gave us some incredible insight into his career and spoke about motivation as well.
“It was great and I was able to absorb a lot of points that he made. He spoke about maintaining that winning mentality in training as well as in games and explained to us how in every shooting session when he’s training, he feels he has to score every goal and settles for nothing less – that’s obviously a massive help when it comes to playing games and a brilliant example for us as young players to try to follow.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Jermain Defoe is one of the most natural finishers that English football has produced in the past few decades and so there is no one better to give the likes of Etete pointers about making it at the top level. The club should consider hiring Defoe in a coaching capacity once he retires from the game.
