Spurs transfer target admits he is leaving current club

Rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Xherdan Shaqiri has confirmed he will leave Stoke City this summer and has his hopes set of joining a club in the Premier League.

The Swiss midfielder has been linked with a move to Mauricio Pochettino’s side over the past few weeks and will be able to depart the bet365 Stadium for just £13.5 million due to a relegation clause in his contract.

West Ham United and Everton are also said to be keen to sign the 26-year-old who will be on international duty with his country at the World Cup in Russia this month.

Personally, I’m unsure whether we need Shaqiri. We need a winger with pace and who can press up high, from what I’ve seen of the barrel-chested player he does not have the work rate that we need and expect.

“Yes, of course. It is no secret that I will leave the club.

“I would love to stay in England, I think the league is perfect for me. It’s the best league with the best players, but I do not want to exclude anything.

“Everyone wants to compete with the best, that was one reason why I chose the Premier League. And that’s why I want to take the next step now.”

When asked if he had a good season, he added: “The best? That is difficult to say. I have a very good season and am satisfied with my services, but the best Xherdan? Probably not.

“I’m disappointed we went down, that is normal, but I need not blame myself. I gave everything for the team, and we resisted the descent by all means, but unfortunately we could not prevent it.

“Nobody wants to go down, of course. But first, there are worse things in life, and secondly, you can learn from such things. You have to draw the right conclusions for the future.”
