Spurs update at AFCON and Asian Cup as Son and Bissouma progress to the quarter-finals

Tottenham Hotspur fans won’t be seeing Heung-min Son or Yves Bissouma for a little while longer, as the pair helped their countries progress in the Asia Cup and African Cup of Nations this week to book their places in the quarter-finals of the competitions.

Spurs have been without both their captain, Heung-min Son, and Yves Bissouma since the start of the month, with the two players called up for international duty for the Asia Cup and AFCON.

Young midfielder Pape Sarr had also been absent, representing Senegal at AFCON, but he will be returning to North London this week after Senegal’s premature exit from the tournament.

Tottenham fans are divided at present, with some hoping their players can go all the way and taste success at international level, while others are keen for the important squad members to return to domestic duty and bolster Ange Postecoglou‘s side.

Son and Bissouma through to quarter-finals

Both Son and Bissouma will be staying with their national sides a little longer now, after both South Korea and Mali emerged victorious from their round of 16 ties yesterday.

Heung-min Son: South Korea looked to be heading for the exit after Saudi Arabia took the lead early in the second half of their game and held on right up until the 99th minute, before Cho Gue-sung grabbed a dramatic equaliser.

The tie went to penalties, and South Korea secured the win 4-2 in the shootout. Son played the full game and converted his spot kick. He will now play against Australia on Friday 2nd of February, looking to book a place in the semi-finals.

Yves Bissouma: Mali qualified for the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Burkina Faso, and will now take on the hosts of AFCON, Ivory Coast, on Saturday 3rd of February. Unfortunately, Bissouma was an unused substitute and didn’t feature in the round of 16 tie.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s great to see these two continuing their run in their respective tournaments, but they both have very tough games coming up next. I suspect Bissouma will be returning to London by the weekend, but Sonny will have a real chance of going all the way if South Korea can overcome Australia.
