‘Spurs want to pay’ – Journalist explains what he’s heard about reported target

Dutch journalist Wilfred Genee has claimed that Arne Slot will leave Feyenoord this summer if Tottenham come calling, given the sort of contract that the North London club would be able to offer the Dutchman.

Over the past month, multiple outlets have suggested that Slot is one of the options at the top of Spurs’ wishlist to replace Antonio Conte (Daily Star).

The Times reported on Wednesday that Tottenham are looking for a young progressive coach of the 44-year-old’s profile but added that the Lilywhites might face competition from both Crystal Palace and West Ham United for his signature.

However, a couple of days ago, Dutch outlet, Algemeen Dagblad (via Voetbal Primeur) suggested that Slot is expected to turn down the aforementioned clubs as he had promised Feyenoord general manager, Dennis te Kloese that he would still be at De Kuip next season.

Genee has now dismissed that suggestion, insisting that the Feyenoord head coach would not be able to turn down the sort of salary that Spurs can offer him.

The journalist told Veronica Offside (as relayed by Voetbal Zone): “I heard from people last week that he is not staying anyway.

“He does not want to run the risk that things can go very badly in the Champions League and that he will no longer be in the picture with the big clubs.

“He wants to be financially independent as soon as possible. It’s easier at a big club.

“He wanted to go to Leeds. They wanted to pay €4m and he found that attractive.

“Spurs want to pay even more.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think there is any chance of Slot turning down the Tottenham job if it was offered to him.

However, the Dutchman is unlikely to be the North London club’s top target, which is why I expect the 44-year-old to end up at either Palace or West Ham.
