‘Spurs wanted to sign me’ – Former Man City man claims he could have joined Lilywhites

Micah Richards has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign him after he had fallen out of favour at Manchester City.

Richards is arguably best known for his work as a pundit these days and while it might seem like he has been out of the game for a long time, he is still only 32 years of age.

The defender was forced into early retirement as a spate of injury problems eventually took their toll on him.

Richards’ career did not deliver what it promised as he looked destined to win well over 50 England caps when he initially burst onto the scene.

However, the defender’s career nosedived after he left the Etihad Stadium and he was part of the Aston Villa side that were relegated from the Premier League in 2016.

He eventually decided to call time on his career in 2019 but the central defender has now revealed that he had an opportunity to go to Spurs after falling behind Pablo Zabaleta in the pecking order at City.

Richards said on The Greatest Game Podcast (as relayed by HITC): “Because of my weight and the amount force I would put on my knee, I was never going to come back the same.

“So I came back and I knew Zabaleta was in the form of his life, he was then nailed down as number one, there was no getting back into that.

“He was scoring goals and assisting, I was like ‘I need to do something’, and then Spurs wanted to do the signing, Spurs wanted to sign me.”
