What you need to know about George Abbott

George Abbott, a Tottenham Hotspur Academy graduate, joined Spurs at the age of eight and has grown into a promising talent. This season, he has been catching the eye during his loan spell with League Two side Notts County.

The 19-year-old midfielder signed his first professional contract with Spurs in May 2024, committing to the club until 2027, and joined Notts County on loan shortly after.

Abbott first caught fans’ attention when he made his senior debut for Spurs as a late substitute in the 4-1 victory over Leeds United on the final day of the 2022/23 season.

The following season, Abbott captained Spurs’ Under-21 side to their first-ever Premier League 2 title, leading from the front.

After that, he made a few appearances for Spurs in pre-season friendlies, including matches against Bayern Munich, Vissel Kobe, and QPR, where he looked as promising as the other youngsters.

Now at Notts County, the England U-19 international has been delivering strong performances in midfield, scoring four goals and providing three assists already.

He’s already scored a few spectacular goals, including a long-range strike against Cheltenham and a stunner against Accrington Stanley most recently. If you watch those goals, they scream “Steven Gerrard”.

Notts County recently confirmed Abbott would stay at Meadow Lane for the rest of the season, and their fans couldn’t be happier. The announcement, shared in a tweet, said: “We can confirm that George Abbott will be spending the rest of the season at Meadow Lane! 😍”

Many of the comments came from Spurs fans, happy to see one of their own doing well. However, the tweet brought more excitement among Notts fans. Some called Abbott “the best bit of business this transfer window,” while others said it was “better than a new signing.”

One fan even thanked Spurs for letting him join, writing, “Loving it! Thank you to Spurs.” Another joked, “Hope Spurs win the league cup just because of this.”.

Several fans are already hoping Abbott will stay beyond this season, which might not sit well with many Spurs supporters. One commented, “Better sign him at the end of the season, what a gem,” while another added, “I’d already be talking about next season too!”

A few of them were relieved he wasn’t being recalled by Spurs, with one commenting, “All I saw in my notifications was ‘We can confirm George Abbott’ and my heart sank. Great news though.”

What’s next for George Abbott?

Abbott’s development at Notts County could be pivotal for Tottenham Hotspur as they continue their rebuild under Ange Postecoglou.

George Abbott’s standout quality may remind you of Archie Gray. The young midfielder can adapt to numerous positions, including central midfield, defensive midfield, right-back, centre-back, attacking midfield, and even right midfield.

With Abbott’s loan set to finish this summer, Ange Postecoglou will no doubt be looking at how he can fit into the first-team picture, particularly given his ability to play across multiple positions.

We’ve seen in the past with players like Harry Kane and Harry Winks that Spurs’ youth can thrive with the right opportunities, and Abbott could follow suit.
