Spurs youngster is confident he will deliver more first-team goals this season

Pape Matar Sarr has admitted that he was delighted to get on the scoresheet against Brighton and expressed his keenness to continue making vital contributions in the final third of the pitch.

Ange Postecoglou now has some difficult choices to make in the middle of the park, with all of his central midfielders now fit.

One can argue that Sarr will be the first name in that position, with Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur competing for the other spot, which is perhaps not a situation many fans would have envisaged at the start of the season.

The 21-year-old did his prospects no harm with his impressive display against the Seagulls, netting his third Premier League goal of the season to go with two assists (Transfermarkt).

The youngster confessed that he is quite enjoying the freedom afforded by Postecoglou to make forays up the pitch.

Sarr told Tottenham’s matchday programme (via Football.London): “We work together as a unit in the midfield and whoever is selected to play, we all try to complement each other because the team relies on us a lot.

“My role is practically to play as a number eight, so I try to mount attacks and do my defensive duties too, as the coach wants me to. I try to score goals too, all to help the team where I can.

“I play a bit further forward and I know I could have scored other goals this season because I’d missed one or two chances in games, but that’s how it goes.”

Pape Matar Sarr is planning more Spurs goals this season

Sarr revealed that he loved the feeling when the ball hit the back of the net, asserting that he wants to repay the fans’ support with more goals over the coming months.

He added: “The Premier League season is a long one and I’m sure I’ll go on to score more. I felt it was liberating to score at home – I love to score at our stadium as the fans are always 100 per cent behind us. I love scoring here and sharing those moments with them.

“l want to be back out there for these fans who support me so solidly and with so much love. I can only repay them for those things in the best way I can, by always trying to play my best in every match and scoring goals for them, and I want to continue with our great season, as we all want.”

Among Tottenham’s central midfielders, Sarr is undoubtedly the biggest goal threat, with the possible exception of Bentancur (although the Uruguayan is evidently not at his best right now).

Postecoglou will undoubtedly encourage his Senegal international to use his engine to good effect and continue making runs into the box.
