Stan Collymore labels Spurs fan a ‘glory hunter’ for claiming he would accept Saudi owner

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has labelled a Spurs fan ‘a glory hunter’ on social media for claiming that he would accept immoral owners buying Tottenham as long as they pump a lot of money into the club.

Collymore was critical of Newcastle United fans who were supportive of the Saudi Arabian-backed consortium’s efforts to buy the club from Mike Ashley.

The takeover attempt has now fallen through with the consortium withdrawing their bid for the club, after months of deliberation (BBC Sport).

The takeover bid was steeped in controversy, not only due to the human right violations allegedly committed by the Saudi Arabian government but also due to their alleged involvement in illegal streaming of Premier League matches (Guardian).

Collymore insisted on social media that fans of different clubs should want well-intentioned owners who are committed to achieving success in the right manner.

When a Tottenham fan suggested that on-pitch success was more important than the morality of the owners, the former England international labelled the fan a ‘glory hunter’.

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe one thing that is desperately needed is for the moral case for Financial Fair Play to be made to the fans. I believe a version of FFP rules are vital to retaining the competitiveness of European football. FFP rules do allow clubs to speculate to an extent and the idea that it is just about the big boys wanting to keep it a closed club at the top, is not exactly true. However, with the decision to let City off the hook, FFP is now all but dead.

Newcastle’s proposed takeover might have fallen through but it is only a matter of time before billionaire owners with questionable intentions and backgrounds start buying up more Premier League clubs. In the context where FFP is not going to be enforced, of course, fans are going to want billionaire owners who just pump money into the club as that is the only way to compete at the top.
