Star who has won 10 trophies admits he feared he made a mistake by leaving Spurs

Kyle Walker has admitted that he initially feared he might have made a mistake by leaving Tottenham for Manchester City in the summer of 2017.

Walker evolved into one of the best right-backs in the Premier League at Spurs after arriving from Sheffield United as a youngster.

He and Danny Rose were among the most dynamic full-back partnerships in the world under Mauricio Pochettino but Walker reportedly fell out with the Argentine in 2017 (Goal.com), with Kieran Trippier starting the final few games of the 2016/17 campaign.

Man City paid £53m plus add-ons (talkSPORT) to sign the right-back and since then, Pep Guardiola’s men have gone on to win three of the last four Premier League titles.

Walker has ten top-flight honours to his name: three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, four League Cups, and two Community Shields.

The right-back admitted he had his doubts during his first pre-season with City over whether he had made a mistake by leaving Tottenham. However, he stated that those fears dissipated as soon as the new campaign began.

The former Spurs man told The Telegraph: “I’ve told this story to very few people but we were in Boston on my first pre-season. Bear in mind Tottenham had finished above City in the two previous seasons.

“Anyway, we did a training session and the lads, for whatever reason, weren’t on it and I rang my dad and said: ‘Dad, I don’t know if I’ve made a mistake here’.

“But as soon as it got to the first game of the season, Brighton away, it was like it just clicked, ‘Okay, we’re going on to win the Premier League’ And we destroyed it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The way things ended between Walker and Spurs left a sour taste in the mouth, which is a shame given the nine years of service that the right-back has given us. Now that time has healed the wounds, I look back on the 31-year-old’s time with us with fondness as he was part of some entertaining sides under Redknapp and Pochettino.
