We already knew Pedro Porro was in fine form, but statistics prove the Tottenham Hotspur man is actually the best-performing defender in the Premier League this season.
Porro was the big signing of the last January transfer window for Tottenham. After protracted discussions with Sporting Lisbon, the Lilywhites eventually sealed a short-term loan deal for the Spaniard which was turned into a permanent move this summer.
Despite initial concerns over his ability to adapt to the Premier League, Porro has gradually improved over time, and has particularly excelled in Ange Postecoglou‘s system this term.
Porro now has six assists to his name in 15 appearances for Spurs this season (Transfermarkt) and has proven to be a key figure in the new regime, both defensively and creatively.
After another brilliant performance in the 4-1 win over Newcastle United at the weekend, during which Porro bagged another assist and set up Heung-min Son to win a penalty, Porro’s stock has risen once more.
Is Porro the best defender in the league?
Now, Sofascore statistics suggest Porro is actually the best and highest rated defender in the Premier League this season, and the data backs it up.
He has an average rating of 7.51 out of 10 across the season so far, putting him at the top of the pile and ahead of top defenders such as Virgil van Dijk, Kieran Trippier, and William Saliba.
Sofascore have also named Porro in their team of the week twice, and revealed the 24-year-old has made an average of 3.1 tackles per game, makes 82.9 touches per game, and perhaps most impressively, has not made any errors leading to a goal.
Spurs Web Opinion
I was so excited when we signed Porro, but I’ll admit I was a bit worried about his early form for Spurs. That’s all in the past now though, and he is performing brilliantly right now. Most importantly, he seems to really love it here too.
