Stellini explains how Conte gave instructions to Spurs bench from Italy today

Cristian Stellini has revealed that Conte was in contact with the Tottenham bench during the win over West Ham today, texting people on the bench to relay messages to the assistant head coach (SkySports).

Spurs were without their manager for the second time this month, with Conte also having missed the 1-0 win over Man City following emergency gallbladder surgery.

While the Italian returned to witness Tottenham’s embarrassing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Leicester and the 1-0 defeat to AC Milan in the Champions League, he then flew back to Italy for further recovery.

Conte even admitted himself that he had rushed back to action too quickly, and Spurs announced the head coach would continue to recover in Italy until the time is right for him to return.

When asked if Conte was in charge of substitutions today, Stellini revealed that the bench was in contact with the manager back in Italy and it was very much a combined team effort.

He said (Football London): “Yeah today was a clear balance because Antonio is completely involved. Yesterday, the day before, he wants to listen and hear our feeling and our sensation.

“He gave us some advice during the match and we ask to him sometimes, ‘we want to do this, we want to change this player,’ and he agree with us. He said sometimes wait and that’s it.

“We are in balance to decide and to listen what Antonio likes but he wants every time from me and Ryan that we say to him how we feel with the players, how we feel with the performance because the stadium is different to watching the game on the TV.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I don’t think it will make too much difference for Spurs in the short-term. Conte is still going to be involved in the planning ahead of games, and Stellini/Mason are more than capable of steering the ship in his absence, as they have shown against Man City and West Ham.
