Steven Gerrard offers sound advice to Harry Kane over his Spurs future

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard believes that Harry Kane can take more satisfaction by winning a trophy with Tottenham Hotspur than looking to leave the club for short-term success.

Gerrard nearly swapped his boyhood club Liverpool for Chelsea back in 2005 when he asked for a transfer six weeks after winning the Champions League final (Independent) but ultimately decided to remain at Anfield and signed a new contract before going on to give his best years to the club before heading to LA Galaxy.

Kane was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City last summer with Pep Guardiola admitting he was keen to sign the England captain only to find Daniel Levy unwilling to enter into negotiations (Manchester Evening News).

Failure to secure Champions League football this summer will once again add fuel to the fire over Kane’s future in north London, however, Gerrard himself feels that Kane can continue to find happiness at Tottenham.

Kane will be looking to condemn Villa to defeat tomorrow evening in a bid to strengthen Tottenham’s hopes of a top four finish with Gerrard full of admiration for the 29-year-old and the loyalty he has shown the club he has been at since he was eleven.

Gerrard told The Independent: “I admire his loyalty to Tottenham and, of course, I’m sure it’s been tempting for him on many occasions to go and take one of those options,”

“The Spurs fans should enjoy him and admire the loyalty he’s given them. You can see a guy who is desperate for success with Tottenham and I have a lot of admiration for that.

“He might still have the opportunity to achieve a couple of things in his career which might mean more to him with Tottenham than anyone else because of what Tottenham have also given the player.

“That’s what it boiled down to with me. The decision was, yes I could go to three or four teams in a foreign country or a couple domestically who maybe have a better chance of winning.

“But winning something with your team, the one you love and the supporters you love, I think that will mean more to him for the rest of his life than a short-term fix.”

Sound advice from Gerrard who knows the grass is not always greener, having come close to joining Chelsea.

Spurs fans would love nothing more to see Kane lifting a trophy for the club, but this season qualifying for the Champions League will feel almost on par if it means the striker decides to stay and puts pen to paper on a contract extension.

It makes no sense for Daniel Levy to sell Kane to a Premier League rival, which would only hamper Spurs’ hopes of playing in European football’s most prestigious club competition in the future.
