‘Still open’ – Fabrizio Romano reveals update on Steven Bergwijn’s Spurs future

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham remain locked in negotiations with Ajax over the transfer of Steven Bergwijn.

Bergwijn has been heavily linked with a move to Ajax over the past few weeks (Ekrem Konur) but it seemed as though the Dutchman had saved his Tottenham career, at least temporarily, following his brace off the bench in Spurs’ 3-2 win over Leicester.

The Netherlands international was subsequently named in the starting lineup by Antonio Conte in the London derby against Chelsea last week.

However, the speculation linking the 24-year-old with a move to Ajax has not yet dissipated, with Dutch journalist Mike Verweij claiming a few days ago on De Telegraaf’s football podcast (via SoccerNews) that the Eredivisie giants remain in talks with Spurs.

Romano has now backed up that claim, stating that Bergwijn’s proposed move to the Johan Cruijff Arena is not yet off. He revealed that Spurs are demanding €25m (£20.7m) from Ajax for the former PSV Eindhoven man.

Now that Dejan Kulusevski is seemingly close to completing a move to Spurs (Sky Italy), there is a strong possibility that the club will cash in on Bergwijn before Monday’s deadline. The fact that Ajax and Tottenham are continuing their negotiations suggests that both clubs are keen on finding a solution.
