‘Stood up’ – Tottenham’s Ashley Phillips impresses after slight change in position

Ashley Phillips is continuing to get plenty of plaudits for his displays for Plymouth Argyle, with the centre-back continuing to impress in the Championship since his loan move last month.

Phillips showed already last season after breaking into Blackburn Rovers’ senior side that he is more than good enough to deliver consistent performances at the Championship level.

His performances at Plymouth will thus not come as a surprise for those who have followed the 18-year-old closely, with the teenager sending a message to Ange Postecoglou and co that he is perhaps ready for a first-team role at Hotspur Way.

The Pilgrims fell to a 2-0 loss to Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday, with Phillips and Alfie Devine coming up against another on-loan Tottenham man Joe Rodon.

Ashley Phillips has been a revelation on loan from Spurs

Despite the defeat, the young centre-back received praise for his performance after having been shifted to the heart of defence by Ian Foster, with the on-loan Spurs man said to have coped impressively with Leeds’ attackers.

That was the assessment of Plymouth Live, who handed Phillips a seven out of 10 rating and wrote about him: “Moved into the centre of the back three after his previous seven Argyle appearances were all on the right side.

“The 18-year-old stood up superbly to the test of dealing with Leeds’s Joel Piroe and Georginio Rutter, matching them for physicality and determination.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Tottenham would be delighted with the fact that Phillips is getting minutes and seemingly getting better each game, the one concern they would have is about the role he is playing.

Playing as a part of a back three for a defensively-minded side like Plymouth might not be of too much help in preparing the 18-year-old to operate as a centre-back in Postecoglou’s system.
